Connecting Tableau Cloud to BigQuery

CTA recommends using Looker Studio for data visualization because of its native integration with BigQuery. However, BigQuery also supports connections to other visualization programs, including both Tableau Desktop and Tableau Cloud.

To connect your BigQuery Project to Tableau Cloud:

  1. Create a new workbook or open your existing workbook
  2. Click Data > New Data Source
  3. Click on Connectors and select Google BigQuery (JDBC)

  1. Select General and enter your Billing Project ID.

  1. Sign in with your cta-tech.app credentials.
  2. Allow Tableau Online additional access to your Google Account

  3. After selecting the Google BigQuery JDBC connector in Tableau Cloud and signing in to your cta-tech Google account, you should be able to choose your project, dataset, and table in the Tableau data cloud pane.
    1. If you get a permission error when attempting to use the table(s) you’ve selected and your BigQuery role is viewer, it’s likely you don’t have access to those tables. Contact your PADmin to request access. If you still run into an error after receiving access, contact help@techallies.org.
  4. You should be able to see your PAD Project in your Tableau Cloud to connect, analyze, and visualize your data!
